Among the various surnames in the Newar community, Duwal is one of them. In the local language, they are referred to as “Duwa:”. During the Licchavi and Malla periods, the term Duwar was used. Over time, the “r” sound in the Licchavi-era Nepal Bhasa evolved into the “l” sound, resulting in terms like:
- “Tor” becoming “Tol”
- “Dharikhya” becoming “Dhalikhya” and later “Dhulikhel”
- “Rajakul” evolving into “Layakul” and finally “Layeku”
Similarly, Duwaar transformed into Duwal. The word Duwar itself originates from the Licchavi-era term Dauwarik, which refers to someone who resides or works at a gate (door). Based on this meaning, it can be inferred that the Duwal were individuals associated with the royal palace.
Additionally, Dr. Chunda Vajracharya, in her book “Jitamitra Malla Ko Dhara Pau”, mentions that the makers of duwala (traditional water spouts) were the Duwal. This highlights their historical role and connection to significant craftsmanship and palace-related duties. People who are also known as "Manta/Mahanta" and "Chwalekho" also use the surname Duwal.
In a literal sense, similar other surnames like Dwa and Dware must be equivalent to Duwal.
