Khendhaumaku

Source: GR Ranjit

Among the various surnames in the Newar community, Khendhaumaku is one of them. The term “Khendhaumaku” is derived from three words: “Khen”, “Dhau”, and “Maku”, which together mean “as sweet as egg and yogurt.” Just as egg and yogurt are delicious (maku-se), it is believed that the people of this surname were likely very simple and loyal, which may have led to them being called Khendhaumaku.

This surname is rare, with only two households remaining in Itachen, Bhaktapur. However, after moving to other districts, members of this group began adopting the surname Shrestha. Belonging to the Manava gotra, some families of this lineage currently reside in Chapagaun. Based on their gotra, it can be inferred that this group is part of the Six Thar and had connections to the royal palace during the Malla period.

Once a year, members of this clan from Bhaktapur and Chapagaun gather in the ground of Bhaktapur Multiple Campus for worshipping their ancestral deity.
